The Short Answer

Yes. Commerce and Arts students can become commercial pilots in India. DGCA requires Physics and Mathematics at the 10+2 level — but it does not require you to have studied them during your regular schooling. You can clear these subjects through the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), a Government of India board. Once cleared, you are fully eligible for CPL training — identical in every way to a science-stream student. Airlines do not ask which stream you came from. They ask for your CPL, type rating, and medical fitness.

What the DGCA Rule Actually Says

The DGCA requires all CPL applicants to have completed 10+2 (Senior Secondary) with Physics and Mathematics from a recognised board, with a minimum aggregate of 50% in these subjects. This requirement is defined under the Aircraft Rules 1937, Schedule II, and reinforced in DGCA CAR Section 7.

The rule says "from a recognised board." It does not say "from your original school." NIOS is a recognised board under the Government of India, established by the Ministry of Education. DGCA officially accepts NIOS certificates for CPL eligibility. Thousands of Indian pilots — including many currently flying for IndiGo, Air India, and Akasa Air — entered aviation through the NIOS pathway.

2026 Reform — Pending Approval

In April 2025, DGCA formally recommended eliminating the Physics and Mathematics requirement entirely for CPL eligibility. This recommendation has been submitted to the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation and the Ministry of Law for final approval. As of April 2026, this reform has not been formally notified. Until it is, the current rule stands — and NIOS remains the accepted bridge pathway. Do not wait for the reform. Start your NIOS registration now and proceed with certainty.

NIOS: Exactly What You Need to Do

The National Institute of Open Schooling offers Senior Secondary (Class 12) level courses in individual subjects. You do not need to enrol in a full Class 12 programme. You register for the specific subjects you need — in this case, Physics and Mathematics — and clear them. That is it.

The Complete Pathway: Commerce/Arts to CPL

Here is the step-by-step journey from a non-science Class 12 to a DGCA Commercial Pilot Licence. The NIOS step adds 3–6 months to the beginning — after that, the pathway is identical to a science-stream student.

1
Month 1
Colour Vision Check + DGCA Class 2 Medical
Before spending anything on NIOS or training, verify you have no permanent medical disqualifiers. Get a free Ishihara colour vision test at any optician. Then get your DGCA Class 2 Medical assessed (₹3,000–8,000). If you pass, proceed. If not, you have saved yourself from an expensive discovery later.
2
Month 1–2
Register with NIOS for Physics + Mathematics
Register online at sdmis.nios.ac.in. Select Senior Secondary, choose Physics (312) and Mathematics (311). Pay admission fee. Begin studying — NIOS provides free study materials on their website. If you want coaching, many aviation academies offer targeted NIOS prep for aspiring pilots.
3
Month 3–6
Clear NIOS Physics + Mathematics Exams
Appear for the exam via the On-Demand system (available year-round) or the next public exam session (April or October). Score a minimum of 50% aggregate across both subjects. Results are typically available within 45 days of the ODE exam.
4
Month 4–6 (Parallel)
eGCA Registration + DGCA Ground School
Register on the eGCA portal, obtain your Computer Number, and begin DGCA ground school (Air Regulations, Air Navigation, Aviation Meteorology, Technical General, Technical Specific, RTR). You can start ground school while waiting for NIOS results — the subjects do not require prior Physics/Maths knowledge at the NIOS level.
5
Month 6–12
Clear DGCA Theory Exams + RTR
Pass all DGCA theory papers via the Pariksha portal. Clear the RTR (Aero) exam from WPC, Ministry of Communications. Results are valid for 5 years.
6
Month 12–24
Flight Training — 200+ Hours
Enrol at a DGCA-approved FTO in India or a vetted flying school abroad (USA, Spain, Greece, New Zealand). Complete 200+ flying hours. Obtain your Class 1 Medical. Pass skill tests. Submit your CPL application on eGCA.
7
Month 24–30
CPL Issued + Type Rating + Airline Applications
DGCA issues your CPL. Complete a type rating (A320: ₹18–25L, B737: ₹22–30L). Apply to airlines. Your Class 12 stream is irrelevant at this stage — airlines evaluate CPL, type rating, medical fitness, and interview performance only.
Do Not Wait for the DGCA Reform

The proposal to remove the Physics/Maths requirement is pending Ministry approval. It may take months or years to be formally notified. Meanwhile, NIOS costs under ₹5,000 and takes 3–6 months. There is zero downside to clearing it now. If the reform passes, you lose nothing. If it does not, you are already eligible.

Five Myths Busted

MythReality
"Only science students can become pilots"Any student who clears Physics + Maths at 10+2 level — through any recognised board including NIOS — is eligible. Stream does not matter.
"Airlines won't hire non-science students"Airlines hire based on CPL, type rating, medical fitness, and interview performance. Your Class 12 marksheet stream is never a hiring factor.
"NIOS is not accepted by DGCA"NIOS is a Government of India board under the Ministry of Education. DGCA officially accepts NIOS certificates. Thousands of pilots have entered aviation through NIOS.
"You need to take a gap year for NIOS"NIOS can be completed alongside your regular degree or job. The On-Demand Examination system lets you appear when ready — no fixed academic year.
"Physics and Maths are too hard for non-science students"The NIOS syllabus is standard Class 12 level. Aviation mathematics (navigation, fuel calculations) is applied and practical. With 2–3 months of focused preparation, most students clear both subjects comfortably.

What NIOS Costs

ItemCost (₹)
NIOS Admission Fee (2 subjects)1,500 – 3,000
Exam Fee — Mathematics (theory)300 – 600
Exam Fee — Physics (theory + practical)450 – 850
Study Materials (free from NIOS website)0
Optional Coaching (if needed)5,000 – 15,000
Total₹2,000 – ₹5,000 (without coaching)
₹7,000 – ₹20,000 (with coaching)

For context, the total CPL investment is ₹55–95 lakhs. The NIOS step costs less than 0.05% of that. It is the lowest-cost, highest-impact step in the entire pilot training journey.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a Commerce student become a pilot? +
Yes. Clear Physics (312) and Mathematics (311) through NIOS with a minimum 50% aggregate. Once cleared, you are fully eligible for DGCA CPL training — identical to any science-stream student.
Can an Arts student become a pilot? +
Yes. The same NIOS pathway applies. Clear Physics and Mathematics at the Senior Secondary level through NIOS. DGCA does not differentiate between Arts, Commerce, or Science streams.
Has DGCA removed the Physics/Maths requirement? +
As of April 2026, DGCA has recommended the removal but it has not been formally notified. The recommendation is pending approval from the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Ministry of Law. Until it is notified in the official gazette, the current rule stands. Clear NIOS now — do not wait.
How long does the NIOS pathway take? +
3–6 months. Registration takes 1–2 weeks. Study for 2–3 months. Appear for the On-Demand Examination when ready. Results within 45 days. You can do this alongside your regular college degree — no gap year needed.
Will airlines reject me because I'm from Commerce/Arts? +
No. Airlines evaluate CPL, type rating, medical fitness, DGCA exam results, and interview performance. Your Class 12 stream is not a factor in any airline's hiring process in India.
Can I start ground school before clearing NIOS? +
Yes. DGCA ground school subjects (Air Regulations, Air Navigation, Meteorology, Technical) do not require NIOS clearance to begin studying. You need the NIOS certificate to register for DGCA exams and to enrol at a flying school — but you can start preparing in parallel.
